Work With Us

We are looking to bring on a part-time intern!

The position is remote, part-time, and unpaid. Initially, I have a defined set of tasks we’ll be needing help with (see below).  Long term, this could grow into more.  Our current video editor started as an intern and is now a full-time employee who is spending the month of February in LA to work more closely with us.

BUT I can’t promise that since it is totally dependent on how well we work together.

If you’re interested in applying here’s the specific role we have in mind.  Make sure to read it all 🙂

RESEARCHER

Creating videos takes a long time.  A large portion of that goes into the seemingly simple question: “What should this video be about!?”

When we get it right, our channel grows in leaps and bounds.  When we get it wrong, 95% of our subscribers won’t even watch the video.
So we need someone to help us:

    • plan our content calendar 2 months in advance, making sure to time video releases with trending topics (Game of Thrones season opener, Jordan Peterson’s book tour, Conor McGregor’s fight, etc)
    • write killer titles that make people want to watch our videos
    • create thumbnail concepts that get people clicking (you don’t have to know photoshop, but you need to be able to articulate your vision clearly)

This job is not time intensive.  It does require creative flair and an understanding of what works on YouTube.  The person who excels will likely be:

    • familiar with our videos – you know what we’ve covered in the past and have an idea of how well it performed in terms of views
    • a denizen of YouTube, keeping their pulse on what is happening in video trends
    • good at writing titles that stoke curiosity and make you want to click

The hardest piece is “writing good titles.”  I’ll train you on what I know, but it helps to come in with some intuitive sense of what types of titles drive attention on our channel and on YouTube.

So in order to apply to this job, I have two titling tasks.  First is a rewrite of one of our WORST PERFORMING TITLES EVER 😉

That title is “Why Wonder Woman Is So Insanely Inspiring” (it barely has 70K views)

I think it flopped because

    1. It didn’t pace the reality of our 20-30-year-old male subscriber base – they don’t think Wonder Woman is inspiring, so they didn’t click
    2. It neither promises a concrete benefit nor stokes any particular curiosity

Contrast that with other videos that have done well:

    • “How to Read Anyone” (something we’ve all wanted to know!)
    • “Why Tyrion Can’t Be Killed” (immediately stokes curiosity in any GoT fan)
    • “How To Get Respect Without Being A Bully” (something we’d like to do + a thumbnail of YouTube icon Jordan Peterson)
    • “How To Stop Shyness in 60 Seconds” (specific time frame that creates curiosity + concrete problem we’ve all had + immediately applicable)

Anyway, that’s just to get you thinking about the types of things that make for a good title…

So to apply send an email to [email protected] with 3-5 of your best titles for our video on Wonder Woman (you may want to watch it to check what the content is about).

Keep in mind that had you given me this title before I created the video, I would have been able to adjust the video.

So your title does not need to match the current video content 100%, but it should be possible to make it relate to the topic of the Wonder Woman movie.

My recommendation: write more than 3-5 titles initially.  I often write dozens as fast as I can and then select the best ones from that brain dump later 🙂

In addition, please also send me 3-5 of your best titles for a “talking head” style video (talking head looks like this).  This requires you to select the topic as well as the title.  It can be anything that our channel might cover.

I’ll be accepting a few of the best submissions on a trial basis.  Once we’ve done a slightly bigger project, I hope to narrow it to one intern to continue working with us.

So if you want to apply submit those titles to [email protected] with the subject line “Wonder Woman Titles” by the end of February 7th.

Looking forward to checking them out!

P.S.  If you have a particular skillset (webs design, app design, etc) feel free to send me an email letting me know what you can do.  We have a lot more hires to make this year and I like to hire fans.  So no time frame, but I’ll save your name to come back to when we’re on that kind of project.
