Jokes That Kill In Any Situation

We’ve all had that moment where we wish we could think of something funny to say, but our mind goes blank.  It sucks!

What can you do to get a laugh or lighten the mood in simple conversations?

We have compiled a list of  easy ways to get a laugh in 4 different situations:

  • When someone else is talking
  • When you get teased and need a comeback
  • When you’re asked a question
  • When you’re telling a story

You don’t need to be insanely witty, these are some of the easiest ways for you can get a laugh. Do these consistently and people will love being around you.

So, the easiest way to get a laugh when someone is talking is by non-verbally overreacting to what they’ve said. 

Wordless Walk-Off

The wordless walk-off is one of the more easy jokes, and it is consistent at getting a laugh.

In the example above Mila Kunis stands up and pretends to walk out of the interview after Shaquille O’Neal says he didn’t watch the LA Dodgers in the World Series.

The audience erupts in laughter as well as Shaq and she goes back to continue their conversation. 

This none verbal uses little to no effort and the joke is understood by most. 

An Appearance Analogy
“you look like”

Another type of joke that will get you an easy laugh would be the  Appearance Analogy or simply put the “you look like” joke. It is finding something about the other person that can be teased without offending them.

In your own life, you should generally avoid teasing something that’s hard to change, like weight or height. Instead, if someone teases you, fire back with a “you look like” joke about their clothes. It gets a laugh AND isn’t hurtful to the other person like teasing a more permanent feature would be.

It helps tremendously to smile while you say it so they know for sure that you are being playful. 🙂

An Absurd Answer

Now let’s turn our attention to the most awkward social situation for a lot of people, making small talk.

For most people, making small talk means taking turns asking boring questions and giving boring answers.

A great habit for making small talk more fun and making people love talking to you is to get in the habit of giving an absurd answer.  It is super basic, but almost always gets a laugh. Or at least lightens the mood significantly. It is a win all around. 

Jake Jake Gyllenhaal was asked if he flies in the movie Spider-Man: Far from Home. He responds that he does in this movie and generally in real life. He says it with a serious face, but everyone else gets the joke, laughs and they continue the conversation in a more relaxed state.

You may think this requires being quick on your feet, but the truth is most of us get asked the same questions over and over. For you it may be “where are you from?” or “what do you do?”.

The best thing you can do is think of the situations where you wish you could be funny, and then think of the 3 most common questions you get asked in those situations. Then, come up with a go-to absurd answer for each one.

 

Laugh As You Tell A Joke Or Funny Story

The last of these would be for you to genuinely enjoy yourself and the joke that you are telling. You can simply laugh as you tell a joke or funny story.

This is to take advantage of the psychology of “contagious laughter”.

In the image above, Kevin Hart initially tries to keep a straight face while speaking to Conan about “how his wife puts up with him” but when Conan laughs he can’t help but laugh.

In some cases, this can be big over the top laughter.  Other times it can be as simple as laughing with your eyes, without needing to actually laugh out loud as you speak.
